You have a TFT LCD module that looked fine six months ago. Now the edges are dim and a faint yellow tint is creeping in from the corners. The display still powers on, so what gives? Most of the time the trouble is not the LCD panel. It is the backlight. And the datasheet you picked the module from probably did not mention any of this.
Pretty much every small to medium TFT LCD module uses an LED edge-lit setup. A strip of white LEDs lines one or two edges, firing into a light guide plate that spreads the light across the viewing area. Each LED packs a blue InGaN chip under a YAG phosphor coating. That phosphor is the weak link.
The degradation is not uniform. Heat kills the phosphor faster than it hurts the semiconductor. Once the LED junction crosses about 55°C, every extra 10°C shaves 3 to 5 percent off the phosphor’s conversion efficiency. The blue chip underneath barely notices. So the display does not just get dimmer. It also shifts cooler in color temperature because there is less yellow phosphor output. Someone looking at the screen might say it looks washed out. Peak brightness might still read within range if you only measure at the center.

Suppliers rate backlight life with L70, the number of hours until brightness hits 70 percent of the original. A typical edge-lit module lands at 30,000 to 50,000 hours when sitting in 25°C ambient air. Put that same module inside a sealed box where the internal air reaches 60°C and L70 can crater below 20,000 hours. The air temperature inside your enclosure is the number that matters. The datasheet number assumes open bench conditions that your product will never see.
Total brightness might check out fine on a test jig while the actual display already looks uneven. A handful of physical processes eat away at spatial uniformity in ways a single-point measurement never catches.
Heat imbalance across the LED string is the biggest one. In an edge-lit module, the LEDs closest to the driver board run hotter than the ones on the far edge, often by 10°C or more. Hotter LEDs lose brightness faster. After a few thousand hours the screen develops a gradient. The center spot reading stays clean. The edges tell a different story.
The phosphor itself shifts over time too. YAG particles float in the silicone fill around the LED die. Through enough on-off cycles and temperature swings they drift toward the chip, bunching up in spots. These microclusters tweak local color output. You see nothing wrong on day one, but by the 8,000 hour mark some units show faint yellowish patches. Nobody notices until a fresh unit gets parked next to one that has been running for a year.

Then there is the mechanical angle. Every time the temperature cycles, the LED package, the solder joint, and the board underneath expand and contract at different rates. Tiny cracks form at the solder interface over time. More resistance means higher forward voltage on the affected LED. In a constant-current string the driver pushes more voltage across all the LEDs to compensate. The ones that were fine get overdriven and start degrading too. The whole thing feeds on itself.
When sourcing, ask for:
A module that looks flawless on day one but turns patchy after a year is not a bad LCD. It is a backlight that was picked without accounting for how it ages inside the real enclosure.

If your embedded gear needs a display that holds its look across years of operation, contact us with your enclosure temperature profile and target lifetime. Running the numbers against your actual thermal conditions will surface the failure modes that a datasheet was never going to mention.
1Why does a TFT LCD module become dim around the edges after long-term use?
Edge dimming is usually caused by LED backlight aging rather than the LCD panel itself. Heat, uneven LED temperature distribution, and phosphor degradation can reduce light output near the edges over time, resulting in lower brightness uniformity.
How does operating temperature affect TFT LCD backlight lifetime?
Higher temperatures accelerate LED backlight degradation, especially the aging of the phosphor layer inside white LEDs. While a module may achieve 30,000–50,000 hours of L70 lifetime under standard conditions, actual lifetime can be much shorter in sealed enclosures with higher internal temperatures.
What should manufacturers consider when selecting a TFT LCD module for long-term reliability?
Manufacturers should evaluate module-level L70 lifetime data, brightness uniformity performance, thermal conditions inside the enclosure, and whether the backlight driver supports current adjustment. These factors help ensure stable brightness and color performance throughout the product lifecycle.
