Producing circular LCD screens is far more intricate than simply trimming regular rectangular screens into round shapes. To guarantee stable service life and excellent display effects, manufacturers have to redesign the overall display structure from scratch.
Regular rectangular LCD panels can be easily split and cut along straight edges, while circular screens require ultra-precise shaping processing. The whole production starts with standard TFT glass substrates. Manufacturers adopt sophisticated photolithography technology to attach conductive materials on glass surfaces and build complete pixel control circuits. After finishing the lamination of TFT layers, color filter layers and liquid crystal filling procedures, semi-finished products need to be shaped into standard circles.
Factories mostly use high-precision laser cutting or professional mechanical cutting equipment to cut original rectangular panels into smooth round screens. This working procedure is extremely vital. Only with highly accurate cutting can we prevent damage to edge pixels and keep the glass body intact.
Apart from glass cutting, module assembly poses another big hurdle in actual production. Industry practitioners mention that it is quite tricky to weld and match drive chips on fully circular glass panels, since conventional connecting accessories such as metal pins and conductive rubber strips cannot fit curved edges well. To tackle this practical problem, most circular LCD products reserve a tiny flat edge or make D-shaped notches at the bottom of glass panels, so as to reserve flat installation positions for conductive connecting parts.

Though presented in round appearance, the internal pixel arrangement of circular LCD screens still follows regular rectangular layout. The visible circular display area is formed by shielding and hiding redundant corner pixels. In this industry, screen resolution is defined by the complete length and width pixel parameters of the original rectangular pixel matrix.
When choosing screen resolution, manufacturers mainly take actual usage scenarios, viewing distance and equipment operating performance into comprehensive consideration.
This specification is the most widely used resolution for small-sized circular LCD modules, matching screen sizes ranging from 1.28 inches to 1.3 inches perfectly. It achieves an ideal balance between low power consumption and clear display effect.
Matching drive chip: Mostly equipped with GC9A01 series chips
Applicable scenarios: Sports fitness bracelets, portable health monitoring devices and other wearable electronic products. Its outstanding power-saving performance fits small battery-powered devices perfectly, and many mainstream 1.28-inch circular display modules in the market all adopt this resolution standard.
With consumers raising higher requirements for display fineness, 480×480 resolution circular screens have become popular, which are commonly applied to products with screen sizes between 2.1 inches and 2.8 inches. Higher pixel density makes text display smoother and icon details more distinct.
Matching drive chip: Usually equipped with ST7701 chip, supporting SPI and RGB dual signal transmission modes.
Applicable scenarios: Motorcycle and electric vehicle central control dashboards, industrial simple control panels, mid-to-high-end smart home products such as smart temperature controllers and intelligent door locks.
For large-size circular display equipment above 4 inches, products with 720×720, 800×800 and other higher resolutions are widely available. Such screens are mainly used in products that take display interaction as the core function.
Matching drive chip: Adopt high-speed MIPI DSI transmission chips including ILI9881C and FL7703 to stably transmit massive image data.
Applicable scenarios: High-grade vehicle-mounted central control screens, ship professional display equipment, high-precision industrial man-machine interaction panels, meeting the demand for mass information high-definition display.
| Resolution | Matching Screen Size | Common Matching Chip | Main Application Fields |
