FFC stands for Flat Flexible Cable. It is a bendable connecting cable that realizes one-to-one signal connection between electronic devices. It consists of multiple parallel flat conductors wrapped with protective insulating film, suited for fast wiring and frequent bending scenarios without easy damage.
FFC is mainly divided into two mainstream models distinguished by terminal pin layout.
Type A, also known as Type 1 or same-side pin layout, features pins arranged on the identical side at both cable ends. It is the most widely applied specification in practical use.
Type D, called Type 2 or opposite-side pin layout, has pins set separately on upper and lower sides of two ends. This type serves special matching demands, mainly connecting devices with reversed pin definitions.
Conductors are flat copper paths responsible for signal transmission between connected devices. Terminals are contact points that dock with matched ports of external equipment.
Pitch refers to the center distance between two adjacent pins, which decides the compatibility with connecting sockets. Reinforcement tape fitted at cable ends strengthens rigidity, avoiding damage during plug-in operation.
FFC is manufactured with parallel flat copper wires with tin-plated terminals. Flexible polyester material wraps conductors for insulation and protection, and thickened polyester reinforcing ribs are arranged at both ends.
FFC adopts one-to-one corresponding connection mode. Each terminal at one end matches the same serial number pin on the opposite device. After stable docking, electric signals can pass through internal conductors smoothly to complete data and power transmission between paired devices.
FFC boasts outstanding bending resistance, fitting products with frequent swing and folding movement. Its simple structure enables quick assembly and disassembly. The universal one-to-one connection design brings good versatility, and it also features affordable manufacturing cost.
On the downside, it cannot support sophisticated circuit layout, failing to meet high-end functional demands. Meanwhile, its overall stability and service life are inferior under harsh working conditions.
It is commonly adopted in camera internal sensor and mainboard connection. In robotic equipment, it forms flexible connecting parts for movable mechanical arms. Laptops, printers and display screens also rely on FFC for internal component wiring.
Besides, it serves vehicle instrument panels and in-car entertainment systems, medical imaging diagnostic gear, industrial automatic machinery and daily household appliances like washing machines and microwave ovens.

FPC is short for Flexible Printed Circuit. Different from ordinary cables, it takes flexible substrate as base and prefabricates integrated circuits on the surface. It can be freely bent and folded, making it ideal for intricate circuit layout inside narrow installation space. It carries the same signal processing function as rigid circuit boards, while possessing flexible structural characteristics.
Custom circuit routes are engraved on FPC, so most products are tailor-made for specific equipment. Lightweight and bendable features make it the preferred choice for compact devices with complex wiring requirements.
Terminals are contact points for external docking. Pin arrangement mode ensures accurate signal matching. Pitch standard follows the same specification as connecting accessories.
Vias are plated holes that conduct electricity between different circuit layers. Traces are conductive paths for signal circulation, and single or multi-layer wiring designs are available.
Common electronic components such as resistors, capacitors and chips can be mounted directly on FPC surface. Reinforcing plates enhance structural firmness at connection areas. Polyimide or polyester material acts as the supportive base substrate.
Flexible polyimide or polyester forms the basic bottom layer. Copper conductive circuits are adhered layer by layer via special adhesive materials. Multilayer boards adopt hollow plated vias to achieve interlayer conduction.
Local reinforcing parts with different hardness are added according to usage demands. Outer covered protective film plays an insulating role. Partial surfaces attach shielding foil to cut off electromagnetic interference, and terminals are processed with tin or gold plating for stable soldering performance.
FPC connects two sets of equipment through end terminals to build power and signal transmission channels. Compared with FFC, its internal circuit routes are more diversified. Signals transmit along preset etched traces, and partial signals will be distributed to onboard electronic components. Multilayer structural design realizes cross-layer signal interaction through built-in vias.
FPC supports multi-layer wiring and component welding, capable of designing complex circuits. It can be highly customized according to actual functional needs. It retains excellent bending performance and stands high temperature, chemical corrosion and other severe environments with better durability.
The defects lie in complicated production process, more raw material consumption and higher selling price. Customized circuit layout leads to poor universal applicability, and the design and development cycle of high-precision FPC is relatively long.
Smart wearable devices such as smart watches use FPC to connect sensing modules and data processing circuits. Lightweight property makes it applicable to satellite solar panel power connection systems.
Smartphones, tablets and portable cameras widely apply FPC to save internal space. It also matches automotive control panels, driving assistance systems, medical monitoring equipment, aerospace communication devices and high-precision industrial robotic machinery.
